Low Vision

Eschenbach-Smartlux

Sight impaired/Severely Sight impaired or reduced field of vision

Nearly two million people in the UK are affected by eye problems such as low vision, but you can maximise eyesight if it is addressed and dealt with properly.

At Bridle Opticians, our optometrists work closely with people suffering from Macular degeneration, as well as Glaucoma and Diabetes. We endeavour to help our patients make the most of the vision which they retain, rather than mourning the vision which they have lost.

If you notice any decline in your eyesight you should always come to us so we can check them for you.

Signs that you need to seek our help include:

  • Finding it difficult to read.

  • Struggling to see signs when driving.

  • Difficulty judging depth (e.g. a step)

  • Colours looking washed out.

  • Straight lines looking wobbly.

Eschenbach-Smartlux2In most situations we can help by providing stronger spectacles, or even a magnifier. However, what we always find useful here at Bridle Opticians, is listening to what you want, and finding a way that we can do that for you.

Our adaptive equipment can be very helpful tools. These include:

  • Handheld illuminated magnifiers that are eminently portable and useful where you are not in control of the lighting environment;

  • Stand magnifiers for those tasks where you need your hands free;

  • Bar magnifiers where the problem is one of difficulty following the line of text and confusion from other surrounding text.

  • For people that have problems seeing the TV the TVMax offers 2.1x magnification with the option to focus each eye independently.

We spend a great deal of time discussing lighting with our patients; people still seem to think that they should be able to read in the dark!! One of the best task lamps is available from the RNIB; see their website (link below) under lighting/task lighting.
